About One in Five
Home / About
One in five Australians live with mental illness, and one in six have experienced suicidal thoughts. Despite advances in awareness and support, the prevalence of mental illness has remained largely unchanged over the past 20 years.
One in Five is an Australian not-for-profit charity created to help develop better treatments, find cures and bring hope for mental illness through medical research. Every dollar raised from our events, sponsorships and donations works to fund cutting-edge mental health research undertaken by our world-leading partners.
Australian universities and researchers face significant challenges in funding mental health research due to cuts in government support, reliance on international student fees, and the competitive nature of grant funding. Mental health research is often under-prioritised compared to other fields, and receives limited philanthropic funding. These factors, along with the complexity of interdisciplinary research, contribute to the ongoing funding shortfall for crucial mental illness studies.
Since 2003, we have raised over $4 million. And over 20 years on, we remain committed to funding much needed scientific research into causes, treatments and cures for mental illness.
Help us bring hope for all.
